Air brake theory for Alberta drivers: the supply system, service and spring brakes, dual systems, trailers, the daily air brake check and safe braking. About 45 minutes.

Air brakes stop most of the heavy trucks, buses and trailers on Alberta roads. This online course explains how they work and how to check them, in seven short, interactive lessons. It is built for drivers preparing for the Q endorsement and for employers who want a documented air brake refresher for their drivers.

What learners cover:

  • How an air brake system makes, stores and uses air
  • The compressor, governor, reservoirs, safety valve and air dryer, with a working pressure gauge
  • Service brakes, brake lag and slack adjusters
  • Spring brakes and dual air systems
  • Tractor and trailer connections, glad hands and the tractor protection system
  • The daily air brake check, including a pushrod stroke activity
  • Safe braking, brake fade and long downgrades

Format: self-paced and interactive, with real-world scenarios and a 12-question knowledge check (80% to pass). Learners who pass get a certificate of completion they can download right away, and their score and completion date are kept on file.

Please note: this course does not give you a Q endorsement. In Alberta, the Q endorsement requires an approved air brake course from a licensed driver training school, a practical assessment and the knowledge test at a registry.
