Cold Stress for Outdoor Workers

Cold numbs hands, slows thinking, causes falls and mistakes, and can injure or kill. This course gives outdoor workers and their supervisors the knowledge to spot cold stress early and plan work so it doesn’t happen.

What learners cover:

• Why cold is a workplace hazard, and how Alberta’s OHS Code treats it
• How the body loses heat, and why wet and wind matter so much
• Wind chill and frostbite risk, with an interactive wind chill tool using Environment and Climate Change Canada’s formula
• Recognizing frostnip, frostbite, non-freezing cold injury and hypothermia
• First aid for cold injuries, and when to call 911
• Planning the work: warm-up breaks, shelters, buddy checks and working alone, with a printable cold weather work plan
• Dressing in layers, and checking gear before you go out

Format: self-paced and interactive, with real-world scenarios and a 12-question knowledge check (80% to pass). Learners who pass get a certificate of completion they can download right away, and their score and completion date are kept on file.

Legal references are Alberta’s. The practices apply anywhere in Canada. This course doesn’t replace a first aid certificate.
