Course Description
Winter changes every road in Alberta. Most winter collisions happen on ordinary days, to drivers who keep their summer habits: the same speed, the same following distance and the same trust that the vehicle will stop when they need it to. This course builds the habits that get your drivers there safely, whether they drive a pickup, a van or a service truck.
What learners cover:
- Getting a work vehicle ready: winter tires, block heater, battery, lights and a proper emergency kit
- Why stopping distances grow on snow and ice, with an interactive stopping-distance tool, and how to set a safe following distance
- Where black ice forms, braking with and without ABS, and recovering from a skid
- Driving in blowing snow and whiteouts, and around wildlife
- Alberta’s rules for passing snowplows and for slowing down and moving over for stopped roadside vehicles
- Trip planning with 511 Alberta, and what to do if you are stuck or stranded
Format: self-paced and interactive, with real-world scenarios and a 12-question knowledge check (80% to pass). Learners who pass get a certificate of completion they can download right away, and their score and completion date are kept on file.
Traffic rules and fines are Alberta’s. The driving skills apply anywhere in Canada.
