Salt and De-icer Handling for Winter Crews

For snow removal, property maintenance and facility crews: field level hazard assessment, PPE, choosing a de-icer for the temperature, safe handling and storage, applying it right, site logs and protecting the environment. About 35 minutes, with a certificate.

Course Description

Every walkway, ramp and parking lot your crew looks after is a place where someone could fall, and a place where your crew can get hurt. This course builds the habits that keep sites safe and use less salt doing it, with the records to show the work was done.

What learners cover:

  • Why snow and ice control matters: slip-and-fall claims, occupiers’ liability and crew injuries
  • Doing a field level hazard assessment at every site, with a printable FLHA form
  • Choosing and checking PPE: gloves, eye protection, footwear and ice cleats, hi-vis and cold-weather gear
  • Rock salt, brine, calcium and magnesium chloride, acetates and sand, with an interactive tool that shows which products still work at the pavement temperature
  • Safety data sheets, first aid for eyes and skin, lifting and loading, and storing bagged and bulk product
  • Pre-treating versus melting, reading pavement temperature, calibrating spreaders and hitting the risk spots
  • Keeping site logs that hold up, with a printable log template
  • Protecting plants, concrete and water with low-salt habits

Format: self-paced and interactive, with real-world scenarios and a 12-question knowledge check (80% to pass). Learners who pass get a certificate of completion they can download right away, and their score and completion date are kept on file.
