Aerial Lift Safety

For scissor lift and boom lift operators: planning the job and the rescue, inspection and function tests, fall protection, capacity and stability, power lines, crushing hazards and emergencies.

Course Description

Most aerial lift deaths come from falls, tip-overs, electrocution and being crushed against something overhead. This course is the theory part of operator training for scissor lifts and boom lifts, built on Alberta’s OHS Code and the CSA B354 standards. Your employer still needs to train and evaluate you on the lift you’ll use.

You also get a printable lift work plan with a rescue section, and a weekly pre-use inspection log.

  • Lift types and the rules that apply
  • Planning the job, the ground, overhead hazards and the rescue
  • Pre-use inspection and function tests
  • Fall protection in boom and scissor lifts
  • Capacity and stability, with a platform-loading exercise
  • Power line distances and crushing hazards
  • Emergencies, lowering and shutting down

Online courses are one part of operator training. They don't replace site-specific training, a hands-on practical evaluation or your employer's authorization, and a certificate of completion isn't a licence or proof of competency. See our training disclaimer.
