For snow removal and landscaping contractors, the first storm is the worst time to find out a new operator has never cleared a parking lot at night. Seasonal crews turn over every year, and the window between hiring and the first big snowfall is short. A simple onboarding plan makes that window count.
Start before the season, not during it
Book onboarding for the weeks before your first expected snowfall. Operators who learn the equipment, the routes and your expectations in good conditions make better decisions when visibility drops and the pressure is on.
A practical onboarding checklist
- Paperwork first. Confirm licences, any required certifications and your company policies before anyone touches a machine.
- Knowledge refresher. Cover pre-trip inspections, visibility and blind spots, working around pedestrians, and what to do when something goes wrong. Short online modules work well here because operators can finish them on their own time.
- Hands-on time. Walk each operator through the specific equipment they’ll run. Every plow, loader and skid-steer is a little different.
- Route walk-through. Drive or walk the sites in daylight. Point out curbs, drains, islands, overhead hazards and where snow can and can’t be piled.
- Practical evaluation. Watch each operator run the machine and sign off only when they’re ready.
- Keep the record. Note who was trained, on what, when and by whom. You’ll want that record if there’s an incident or an audit.
Don’t forget your returning operators
Experienced operators bring good habits, and a few bad ones. A short refresher at the start of each season resets expectations, covers any new equipment or sites, and gives you a dated training record for everyone on the crew, not just the new hires.
Make it easy to repeat
The best onboarding plan is the one you can run again next year without starting from scratch. Online refreshers handle the knowledge piece consistently, so your supervisors can spend their time where it matters most: on the equipment, with the operator.
We build short refresher courses for equipment operators, with a record kept for every learner and volume pricing when you’re training a whole crew. Need hands-on help too? We also offer in-person equipment operator training by special request.
