Train the Trainer: Equipment Operator Training

Course Description

Being good at running a machine and being good at teaching someone else to run it are two different skills. This course is for the people who do the teaching: supervisors, lead hands, safety staff and experienced operators who are asked to train new operators on loaders, forklifts, skid-steers and other equipment.

It covers why employers have to train and what the law expects, then gives trainers a practical method for teaching complex equipment tasks without overwhelming the learner, and the paperwork to back it up.

What learners cover:

  • The legal duty to train, what competent means, and what has to happen before someone operates equipment
  • The history behind workplace training and safety law, and what due diligence means for a trainer
  • How adults learn, and how to work with working memory instead of against it
  • Compartmentalizing: breaking an equipment inspection into small, teachable pieces
  • Teaching hazard assessment: the field level hazard assessment (FLHA), spotting hazards while operating, and the trainer's own hazard watch during training
  • Writing clear objectives and a lesson plan
  • Building a fair practical evaluation with critical items and clear standards
  • Running a hands-on session: checking credentials, teaching from the operator's manual, what to watch for, how to give feedback and when to stop
  • Training records, authorization, refreshers and what the employer needs to keep

Trainer toolkit included: a lesson plan template, a practical evaluation template and an operator training record. Fill them in on screen and save as PDF, or print them.

Format: self-paced and interactive, with real-world scenarios and a 15-question knowledge check (80% to pass). Learners who pass get a certificate of completion they can download right away, and their score and completion date are kept on file.

Built on Alberta's OHS Act, Regulation and Code. The training methods apply anywhere, and the legal principles carry across Canada once you know your own province's rules.
